21 Things You Should Never Buy New
Yahoo lists 21 things you should never buy new as follows:
1. DVDs and CDs
2. Books
3. Video Games
4. Special Occasion and Holiday Clothing
5. Jewelry
6. Ikea Furniture
7. Games and Toys
8. Maternity and Baby Clothes
9. Musical Instruments
10. Pets
11. Home Accent
12. Craft Supplies
13. Houses
14. Office Furniture
15. Cars
16. Hand Tools
17. Sports Equipment
18. Consumer Electronics
19. Gardening Supplies
20. Timeshares
21. Recreational Items
For the most part, this list is irrelevant — either I don’t use the items noted or I do buy them new. My thoughts on each:
1. DVDs and CDs – I never buy DVDs (who wants to watch the same thing more than once?) and hardly ever buy “physical” music (I’ve gone electronic/digital.)Â
2. Books – 99% of my reading is done from the library. Every once in awhile I will buy a book, usually new, to add to my collection. But it has to be a REALLY GOOD book for me to purchase it.
3. Video Games – We buy both new and used, depending on what we want at the time. Then again, we only buy one every few months at the most anyway.
4. Special Occasion and Holiday Clothing – Don’t buy much of this stuff. We just wear what we already have.
5. Jewelry – I think the last time I bought jewelry was when I purchased our wedding rings. Neither my wife nor I are big jewelry buyers.
6. Ikea Furniture – For the most part, we buy new furniture that we plan to use for years.
7. Games and Toys – Our kids have mostly moved out of the toys phase of life, but we do occasionally buy a new game. We also can check them out from the library, so that saves us a bit as well.
8. Maternity and Baby Clothes – No need, thank goodness.

9. Musical Instruments – We bought our piano new 15 years ago and got my son a new guitar a year or so ago. My daughter is thinking of taking up the flute and we’ve been talking about renting one.
10. Pets – They’re joking, right?

11. Home Accent – We buy new. Sorry.
12. Craft Supplies – Again, buy new (and use until gone — my daughter is an “artist”.)
13. Houses – We’ve never had a brand new house — always bought “used.” That said, our homes haven’t really been that old either. The oldest we’ve purchased was 25 years old.
14. Office Furniture – Not much need for this.
15. Cars – We buy new and use for many, many years. I’m looking to make a new purchase soon.
16. Hand Tools – We buy new. I like having/using my own stuff, especially when there’s a good chance I’ll break it.

17. Sports Equipment – Again, they’re joking, right?
18. Consumer Electronics – We buy new.
19. Gardening Supplies – Buy new.
20. Timeshares – There’s no way we’d ever buy a timeshare.
21. Recreational Items – We’ve not into the boat/RV scene.
How about you? Any of these seem to strike a cord with you one way or the other?
