If you’ve ever seen any of the popular blaxploitation films of the 1970s, you no doubt remember actress Pam Grier.

She was the beautiful, sexy, take-no-mess woman featured in movies ranging from ‘Foxy Brown’ to ‘Coffy.’

Over the years, Grier has remained an iconic actress, taking on a broader range of acting jobs on shows as diverse as ‘The L Word’ on Showtime to ‘Jackie Brown’ on the big screen.

Although Grier is best known for her long career in film, she’s also in the spotlight now with a new book, called Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.’

Since the memoir promises to detail Grier’s fascinating life, it caught my eye. Actually, it caught my husband’s eye first, and not just because, like many men, he used to drool over Pam Grier. As it turns out, my husband Earl is actually a book agent. So he often stays “in the know” about new titles coming to market. Anyway, Ron Kavanaugh, who heads up Mosaic Books, gave Earl a heads up about the upcoming debut of Grier’s new book via the Mosaic Books newsletter.

When Earl tried to get more information about what Grier has been up to lately, he assumed she would have a website or some other online platform to promote her work. So Earl typed in “PamGrier.com.” Unfortunately, he was instantly re-directed and unwittingly wound up on the website of Hustler.com.

For obvious reasons, I doubt that Pam Grier wants people who are searching online for her to wind up at Hustler’s website. It’s unfortunate that so many people and organizations squat on the names of public figures and high-profile celebrities just to make a buck. So a word to the wise here: dot-com your name if you haven’t already done so. In this media-driven society, lots of people become overnight celebrities. So even if you’re not a household name now, you never know what the future holds. And you don’t want someone else damaging or misappropriating your brand (i.e. your name).

On the upside, even at age 60, Grier is actually doing her thing online — and in a big way. She has almost 360,000 followers on Twitter, where she can be found @pamgrier.

In related news, Grier just announced another film project in the works. She’s going to be play the role of Julia Roberts’ best friend, in the upcoming flick ‘Larry Crowne,’ directed by Tom Hanks. It’s great to see such longevity and steady work for an African American actress who has paid her dues and can still command center stage.
