A Few More Sleepless Nights For Shareholders (TSPT, DNDN)
A three month extension of Transcept Pharmaceuticals’ (Nasdaq TSPT) July 30th FDA action date to October 30th is sure to cause a few more sleepless nights for the biotech company, who are working on a new sleep aid. The buzz has been growing about Imprezzo after many of the years sleep disorder conferences such as SLEEP 2009 the 23rd annual meet of Associated Sleep Societies. The reason being the drug would be the first approved for specific use after waking in the middle of the night. The as needed dosing of the medication should greatly reduce the risk of dependence associated with most “sleeping pillsâ€, which must commonly be taken an hour prior to bedtime before a patient knows whether or not they will have difficulty sleeping. The fact that it only uses a quarter to a third of the common active ingredient zolpidem found in other sleep aids is also bolstering excitement.
Many will remember April’s proverbial roller coaster ride that was Dendreon (Nasdaq DNDN), after FDA information came out that their prostate cancer drug Provenge did indeed prolong life in patients with advanced cases of the disease. This news saw the share price settle over 175% higher after the calming of the initial short squeeze. Dendreon is a shining example for the potential of biotech stocks to soar even before receiving FDA approval. All in all with over a quarter of the nation’s population suffering from some form of insomnia Transcept is one to watch.
