I thought that it was something taken from Soviet culture and not celebrated anywhere else. Though it's definitely not a political event anymore, it's still a very warm day when you can show women your love... Sounds more like a mixture of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother's_Day" title="Mother's Day" rel="nofollow">Mother's Day</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Valentine's_Day" rel="nofollow">St. Valentine's Day</a>, but what's really great about it is that the tradition to give tulips to women has overgrown a "home" event, and today many companies hold celebrations in their offices the day before IWD (since the very day is an official holiday). It's a beautiful way to express how you appreciate and love the women in your life - e.g. to congratulate our company's ladies I've shot a greeting video (you can check it out in my <a href="http://blog.handybackup.net" title="Handy Backup Blog" rel="nofollow">blog</a> - though it has some local IT-humour, it's cute and creative). PS When on the 9th March I found a post about International Women's Day in an official White House blog at whitehouse.gov, I was filled with positive energy, hehehehe. I don’t know why but I was amused to find out that International Women’s Day is paid attention to in other countries that just Russia and CIS countries. Though it’s definitely not a political event anymore, it’s still a very warm day when you can show women your love… Sounds more like a mixture of Mother’s Day and St. Valentine’s Day, but what’s really great about it is that the tradition to give tulips to women has overgrown a “home” event, and today many companies hold celebrations in their offices the day before IWD (since the very day is an official holiday).
