Global Warming Effects: 10 Startling Facts from 2009

…are projected to grow.” These changes include “increases in heavy downpours, rising temperature and sea level, rapidly retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, lengthening ice-free seasons in the ocean and on lakes and rivers, earlier snowmelt, and alterations in river flows.” Slight changes in the climate may trigger abrupt threats to ecosystems.

According to a report by the U.S. Geological Survey, slight changes in the climate may trigger abrupt threats to ecosystems that are not easily reversible or adaptable, such as insect outbreaks, wildfire, and forest dieback. “More vulnerable ecosystems, such as those that already face stressors other than climate change, will almost certainly reach their threshold for abrupt change sooner.” An example of such an abrupt threat is the outbreak of spruce bark beetles throughout the western U.S. caused by increased winter temperatures that allow more beetles to survive.

Coastal wetlands from New York to North Carolina could be lost.

The EPA, USGS and NOAA issued a joint report warning that most mid-Atlantic coastal wetlands from New York to North Carolina will be lost with a sea level rise of 1 meter or more.

U.S. production of corn, soybeans and cotton could decrease as much as 82%.

If we do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the century, some of the main fruit and nut tree crops currently grown in California may no longer be economically viable, as there will be a lack of the winter chilling they require. And, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, U.S. production of corn, soybeans and cotton could decrease as much as 82%.

I was wondering how to respond to this, when I read it …

    You’re full of bull … $hit!

Come on, the serious press have stopped printing this rubbish. The debate has moved on no longer: “how serious is the threat”, but “how far do we have to dig beneath the BS to find the truth”. We know the climate varies naturally, we now know post climategate that there was little real science behind this eco-propaganda sexing up normal climatic variation as some apocalypse. The only real question now is whether if you discount all the lies, there is still some residual effect which although much smaller than we have been told, may still require some action.

What we need is a fresh start with real unbiased scientists to have another look at the temperature record and see (after all the upjusting has been removed) how much is real temperature change and the real kinds of impacts that is likely to produce – not based on hysterical eco-idiots dressed up as scientists, but based on real scientific analysis of the real impacts of climate, both beneficial and harmful.

Mike Hasseler, typical of the echo-box right, instead of responding to the evidence presented to him, denies it, because if he was forced to rationally regard it, he would have to shift his positions.
The reason Mike, that the story coming out of the mouth of climate scientists, geologists, meteorologists, and really, any one who has oput some effort into studying this, hasn’t changed, is because it hasnt.
If only, the warnings and predictions coming from peer reviewed journals like Science and Nature have been proven more accurate, and even startlingly conservative when it comes to the actual amount of climate shift we are experiencing.
The real issue here, is not the science. We know that is on ongoing topic; more evidence will accrue, some supporting existing bodies of thought, and hopefully, some which will challenge what we think we know. The real issue here, is the attitude that denialists like Mike Hasseler maintain. It’s the demanding maintenance of business as usual which is killing us and our planet, which dominates individuals like Mike Hasseler, and threatens us most greatly as a species.
20 years ago, this was a choice painted as a decision between profitability and responsibility. We know now that choice is a false one. A healthier planet is a profitable planet, and it will take responsible choices for us to get there, choices the individuals like Mike Hasseler, not only refuse to make, but actively try to prevent those who do find find reason enough to act from doing so.

Well, here’s a startling Climate Change fact from a thousand years ago.

The overwhelming paleoclimate evidence from around the globe is that the Medieval Warm Period (MWP) was synchronous, world wide and much warmer than today.

A thousand years ago the world was warmer than today without the affects of CO2 from social and industrial advancements that make human kind today the healthiest and most prosperous in history.

However, the MWP deniers will never admit the existence of the MWP because it means that their religous-like belief in AGW is exposed for the steaming pile of junk science that it truly is.

If we are lucky, Mother Earth’s temperature will return to those glorious levels in the past where Greenland was farmed by the Vikings and my ancestors, the Polynesian people, made important voyages of discovery across the Pacific in search of cooler temperatures. Siberia will become the world’s food basket and the Sahara might bloom again as a warmer world brings more rainfall there.

Two hundred years from now or so, with our planet facing a pending new Ice Age, people will look back at those today that decry against Plant Friendly, Ocean Cleansing and Life Giving CO2 with the same incredulity that we look back at the those that burned Witches in during the Dark Ages.

    Here’s a picture.

    I consider myself duly startled.

I believe that Global Warming is happening and the data is real and viable. However, there is a few things that have to be noted.

Non-believers have their own agenda.. the majority think that it’s going to cost them “money” in the long run. Other think “why bother” seeing how they will past-away before the crisis meets a climax.

The other main issue is this is sue is not going to be solved. It is easy for companies around the world to keep on polluting the atmosphere and environment then to go “green”..

Some of us saw this back in the 70′s and 80′s as a problem, and this is still ongoing now in the 2000′s. Remember “Devo”….

The general public here in the United States are skeptics about the danger we face. As the events and story evolved these last few decades there always was an element of uncertainity that enabled the skeptics to take advantage and instill more doubt via sponsored media outlets.
Unfortunately, journalism is financial dire times and lacking.
Judging from the responses I have read, the vocal groups at this time are the anti-climate sector.
Average people are not receptive to the science, which is not explained in a coherent manner and seems multifaceted. I, myself, have kept up with the reading and it does become overwheleming to say the least.
It did not help matters with the former administration in office.
I have read Dr. James Hansen’s new book, “Storms of My Grandchildren”, and if he is correct we do not have the luxury of not acting.
Unfortunately, without dramatic proof that it is occurring by our burning of fossil fuels, I’m afraid politicans will only pass half measures to green-wash the issue away. This is currently being done in Washington now by the Senate bill being forged by John Kerry.
The question remains, if it is so…do we have the lead time?…

I watched the most ridicoulous program I have ever seen this weekend one on of the General Electric Channels called 2100. On this program a “scientist” said that future generations would call 2010 the begining of the “dark ages.” The program was lead by a fictional woman who was born in 2010 and lived to be the oldest women on earth. Charactors included all of Obama’s left wing partners including Van Jones, John Bathesda, Tom Friedman and others. The underlying idea was that private business would end the world as we know it, very sublle but there.

The climate has been warming for the past 18,000 years. Nothing new there, only the argument that it’s caused by humans.

Please explain to me the origins of the mesozoic hothouse. For some reason it was hotter then than now and I don’t think the dinosaurs were driving around cars. Also, it snowed in Dallas a couple days ago. Last I checked it was almost April. Dallas is in Texas by the way (it’s usually hot here) And don’t tell me it was increased precipitation. IT SNOWED MEANING IT WAS COLD.

    Thank you

What makes me smile is that more and more, those commenting AGAINST this BS are the ones with the obvious upper hand. Those commenting for are sounding more and more like your average cultist.

It’s a beautiful thing. I wonder if this is how it happened to the global cooling believers decades ago? Don’t worry, just because you got duped doesn’t mean we all still won’t love you. Everybody makes mistakes.

  • Julie

    Bear,
It’s called climate CHANGE. Does it typically snow in Dallas in April?
