Talk about life imitating art.

Sandra Bullock won an Academy Award for starring in “The Blind Side” and portraying Leigh Anne Tuohy, the well-to-do adoptive mother of Michael Oher, an inner city teenager who went on to become an offensive linesman for the Baltimore Ravens.

Now Bullock is adopting a Black son in real life. Only this time, according to People magazine, it’s a 3 1/2 month old baby named Louis Bardo Bullock. The child, who was born in New Orleans, is named after the great jazz player, Louis Armstrong. The adoption is now being finalized. But it has to be bittersweet for the 45-year-old actress, given recent ups and downs in her life. It was only back in March that Bullock nabbed her first Oscar. Then, just a week or so later, she was rocked by scandalous allegations that her husband, actor Jesse James, had been cheating on her. Bullock told People she has now filed for divorce.

Of all the sordid details to emerge about James’ alleged affairs, was the fact his primary alleged mistress was a tattoo-clad stripper with a penchant for swastikas and Nazis. The whole racial supremacy thing was the huge factor that made me think that a woman like Bullock would definitely not stay married to James. That’s why I predicted they would divorce in a previous column. Cheating is one thing. Maybe a couple can get past that. But being a bigot is just totally untenable to those who don’t share such misguided beliefs.

I don’t know whether Jesse shares the same fascination with Nazis as does his stripper gal. Some say that he does, and that he’d successfully fooled Bullock into thinking he’d changed and had lived down his bad boy past. For his part, James actually put out a statement today saying that he loves little Louis and has a “huge hole” in his heart at the prospect of losing him and Bullock.

Whatever the case, I do recall Bullock winning her Oscar and telling the world that her momma taught her that “there’s no race, no religion, no class system, no color, nothing, no sexual orientation that makes us better than anyone else. We are all deserving of love.” It was such a profound speech. And that sentiment made people in America fall in love all over again with Bullock.

So it’s heartening to know that while all the drama was going on, and so much of the spotlight was being cast on this celebrated actress, privately Bullock was actually experiencing some joy in her life via her newborn son
