Sanyo Unveils Solar-Powered Bus
Sanyo has announced world’s first solar cell-equipped public bus in a joint effort with Japanese public transport operator Ryobi Holdings Co.
The public bus called “Solarve” is a hybrid diesel-electric bus whose rooftop solar cells generate 798 watts powering the interior LED lights. Aside from lighting, the cells also run the air purifiers that keep pollutants and other impurities from disturbing the passengers inside.
In the absence of sun, solar power stored in a battery will keep the lights on for nine hours.
Sanyo’s Solarve bus is the first use of this technology in mass transit.
The Solarve was unveiled to commemorate the 100thanniversary of the Ryobi who will operate the busses.
Solarve is expected to be plying the commuter route by September 1 in Okayama City in Southern Japan.
