Sun Tran And Union Negotiating New Contract

The City of Tucson is anticipating negotiations to continue tomorrow that could allow for the signing of a new contract agreement between Professional Transit Management (PTM) and Teamsters Local 104 that will avert a public transit work stoppage in the Tucson region that could occur as early as Monday, August 2, 2010.

PTM oversees the management and operations of the City of Tucson’s Sun Tran public transit system. Teamsters Local 104 is the labor union representing many of Sun Tran’s operating personnel. PTM is under contract with the City of Tucson to manage and oversee the daily operation of Sun Tran. The current contract expires midnight, July 31, 2010.

While the City of Tucson is not involved in the contract negotiations between PTM and Teamsters Union Local 104, the City of Tucson’s General Fund budget includes resources which consider historic trends in ridership, fuel costs and cost-sharing agreements with other local jurisdictions

“In approving the fiscal year 2011 budget, the City of Tucson Mayor and Council has provided a fair and equitable funding source to PTM to maintain services and adequately negotiate in good faith with the Teamsters Union Local 104,” said City of Tucson Department of Transportation Director Jim Glock.

Should there be any labor negotiations updates or changes to service, Sun Tran will inform customers through its customer service phone center, rider alerts on http://www.suntran.com, and notices posted at transit centers. Additionally, Sun Tran will work with local media to share information with the general public.
