Cheapest way to get levelII is open account who support it. TD ameritrade and MB trading support it with under $10 per month. You do not need use them. Just get datafeed. As long as I know there is no minimum balance to keep.

Fill out an application for TD Ameritrade, don't fund your account and your account is in a limbo phase. Download the free StrategyDesk software that is intended only for day traders with over $25 in their account.

Then in the Strategy Desk software you will have access to live T&S data, Level 2 for some exchanges, all the cool charts, and what ever else in in the software free!

I did this and had it up and running in less than 15 minutes. StrategyDesk seems like it can be very useful. Slightly intimidating at first, but once you get used to it I am sure its great.

I read on one of the forums that TD closes the accounts if you use the software only for data feed. Is that correct?

As long as I know, opening account will give level I only. To get levelII for nasdaq, you have to pay $9.xx (?) per month.

MB trading will give it free if you have 25K or $10 per month.

MB is MB Trading, it's one of the very best online traders in my opinion. I have used them and Interactive Brokers, and I believe that these 2 are the best and cheapest brokers (IB is probably a little better because they have a larger shortable stock list).
