Real Estate Agent vs Realtor: What’s the difference?

By Sequoia on 07/10/2010 – 4:24 am PDTLeave a Comment

Both a real estate agent and Realtor can sell real estate. However, there are some key differences between the real estate agent and the Realtor. The difference between a real estate agent and a Realtor is that the Realtor is a member of the National Association of Realtors. This is a national group that sets forth standards that must be adhered to by real estate professionals that join. This means that Realtors are held to a higher standard than a traditional real estate agent.

What It Means to You

If you are considering hiring a Realtor, you are going to get a professional that has to abide by 17 codes of conduct that are set forth by the National Association of Realtors. One of the rules is that they have to put the interests of the buyers and sellers in front of their own interests. This means that you are going to get someone that will represent you that is going to look out for you. They are also obligated to provide all of the facts and refrain from exaggerating or lying about anything throughout the process.
