6 Pointers To Help You Find A Good Real Estate Agent

By Chandler Man on 07/30/2010 – 3:30 pm PDTLeave a Comment

Whether you are buying or selling a home, you want an agent who will represent your best interests. You also want an agent who is professional, ethical and knowledgeable. Here are some pointers that should make it easier for you to select the best person for the job.

1.    Go National or Stay Local

National real estate companies may seem a better option due to their large-scale operating business. However, you should keep in mind that you will be conducting your business with a local branch; so you will probably want to know about their standing with the local community. You should not be so quick to dismiss a local real estate agency since they may have more insight where real estate transactions in your region are concerned and may be more attentive to your personal demands.

2.    Credentials

Always check that the real estate agent has an active real estate license, and ask what other real estate designations they hold. The best place to satisfy your query is your state’s governing agency. Real estate agents belong to the National Association of Realtors, widely known for their firm ethical code which occasionally puts to shame common legalities.

3.    Discussing Fees

Upon the completion of a sale, the agent is entitled to a percentage. It is often worth negotiating a lower commission with the agent, and ask if they will consider increasing the buyer agent’s fee to improve your chances of a sale. If you are buying property, the first thing you need to do is agree upon a fee with your agent.

4.    Area Experience

You will want to place your trust in a real estate agent who has proved both skills and knowledge in property transactions locally. You will need someone who can give you the selling prices for your region and who can expertly promote the selling features.

5.    Price Range Experience

You are likely to know a thing or two about local pricing for houses such as yours. But what if your agent doesn’t or is experienced in selling homes bigger or smaller than yours? Then it is time to look for another agent.

6.    Services Offered

Make sure your real estate agent gives you an ample description of the services he can supply. Also try to make your wishes known when it comes to the advertising of your home. Likewise, if you are buying, you want to know that you are paying an agent to do more than search on the internet, which you could do yourself. Furthermore, you should check if they can assist you with the house inspection and recommend people to help sort the financial and legal details.

Definitely an issue not to be dismissed when choosing a real estate agent is their personality. The selling just like the buying of a home can turn out to be quite lengthy, no matter how much you will pray for the opposite. Therefore, you are bound to see quite a lot of your agent while waiting for it to be over, more so if you’re selling. It is far better to have an agent that you can communicate with and that you like to spend time with.

The choice of a real estate agent doesn’t only influence the financial outcome, but also the quality of the process. The right agent will make everything seem more bearable.
